De-Icing Material Management: How to Track, Optimize, and Reduce Salt Usage with BOSS Equipment

De-icing material management helps snow and ice management contractors reduce waste, improve safety, and control costs by tracking and optimizing material usage. BOSS spreaders support this with rate control, job tracking, and optional AutoSpread Control, allowing operators to apply the right amount of material at the right time.

Why is material tracking important?

Material tracking in ice management helps contractors monitor de-icing usage, optimize application rates, and accurately forecast material needs for future seasons. By tracking material use by job site, contractors can identify overuse or underuse, improve efficiency, reduce waste, and make data-driven decisions that lower costs and improve service quality.

What are the benefits of de-icing material management?

  1. Safety and Risk Management – Proper de-icing reduces slip hazards, helping prevent accidents and limit liability across treated surfaces.

  2. Cost Effectiveness and Efficiency – Accurate material application prevents waste, ensures even coverage, and improves service speed and quality.

  3. Environmental Impact – Controlled use of de-icing materials minimizes harm to water, vegetation, and surrounding infrastructure.

  4. Compliance – Proper application practices help contractors meet regulations and avoid penalties.

  5. Customer Satisfaction – Consistent, high-quality results lead to safer sites, stronger client retention, and more referrals.

How does BOSS equipment improve my ability to track and adjust deicing material?

BOSS equipment improves material usage tracking by featuring three different methods to control and record the material spread from the equipment.

    1. Rate Control – Set spread width and amount of material spread per minute (up to 150 lbs/min)

    2. Job Tracking – Track material used for up to 10 jobs

    3. AutoSpread Control – Automatically adjust flow rate and spread depending on vehicle speed

Next, we’ll break down in more detail how each feature on BOSS spreader equipment helps improve material management.

What is rate control?

Rate control is a feature that lets operators set and adjust spread width and material flow rate to control how much de-icing material is applied. By monitoring and adjusting rate control settings, operators can dial in precise material distribution and reduce waste. With rate control, you can set:

    • Spread Width – How far your material is applied away from the spinner

    • Flow Rate – How fast, and thereby, how much material is applied to the ground, measured in pounds per minute

Rate control is standard on all BOSS spreaders, and by paying attention to spread width and flow rate, you can gain a better understanding of how much material is used optimally for your operation.

How does BOSS equipment track jobs?

The job tracking option on BOSS spreader controllers lets you track material for up to 10 unique job sites. By seeing how much material was put down at each site, you can streamline customer billing, provide quick proof of service, and improve material supply planning for upcoming seasons.

On the controller, you can:

    • See available job counters for the spreader

    • See material counter values

    • Select a job

    • Reset the counters to zero

What is AutoSpread Control?

AutoSpread Control is a smart material application system that automatically adjusts salt or material output based on vehicle speed. With a direct connection to the truck, AutoSpread adjusts in real time based on your driving speed and desired spread width — delivering fast, precise response to changing driving and spreading conditions. Optional on the MBX+ and VBX+ spreaders, AutoSpread Control is a brand-new feature introduced for the 2026-27 season.

Here’s how AutoSpread works:

  • Truck Starts: Material flow begins and spinner starts automatically
  • Truck Speeds Up and/or spread width is increased: Material flow increases
  • Truck Slows Down and/or spread width is decreased: Material flow decreases
  • Truck Stops: Material flow stops and the spinner stops

Compared to standard rate control, AutoSpread Control reduces over application by automatically adjusting material output based on speed.

In short, when you speed up, more material flows more quickly. When you slow down or stop, the material slows or stops. No more guessing. No more hassle. More material saved.

Can I calibrate the spreader for different types of material?

Yes, all BOSS spreaders come pre-calibrated with 4 types of material with counters. Depending on your spreader model, these materials include common deicing materials like salt, gravel, and sand, as well as calibration settings for spreading other materials.

Calibrating your spreader periodically will improve accuracy for rate control and material tracking. Each material can have a separate calibration factor saved, which controls the spreader differently.

Learn more about how to calibrate your spreader by watching our how to video on YouTube.

The table below summarizes how BOSS spreader features improve material management:

Equipment Feature Key Benefit VBX+ and MBX+
Rate Control Control material spread width and flow Standard
Job Tracking Track material usage on up to 10 different jobs Standard
AutoSpread Control Automatically adjusts spread width and flow based on vehicle speed Optional
